Understanding workforce development involves recognizing key concepts and trends that shape the landscape of employment and skills enhancement. Here are six of the top things I learned during my first year overseeing grantmaking at the Foundation.
1) Relationship Building. Building strong relationships with grantees, prospective partners, stakeholders and other grantmakers is key to success. Understanding the priorities and preferences of funding organizations, attending networking events, and engaging in open communication fosters positive relationships that go beyond funding.
2) Mission alignment. Board and Staff at Deaconess spent time last year refreshing our strategic framework and we are putting it into action in 2024. I learned that successful grantmaking requires a clear alignment with our mission and goals. We prioritize work, projects and ideas that contribute to our overarching mission and create positive social impact.
3) Transparency and Accountability. It was apparent from the onset of my tenure that Deaconess values transparency and accountability. Be transparent about our goals, finances, and intended use of funds. Additionally, during our strategic refresh, we established how important a report back to the community and stakeholders is so we going forward we will have a robust mechanisms in place for reporting on the progress of funded projects.
4) Impact Measurement and Evaluation. Deaconess is increasingly focused on measuring the impact of our contributions to the workforce development ecosystem. It’s important for our grantees to articulate clear goals, outcomes, and methods for assessing the success of their projects. Demonstrating impact is crucial for partnership with the Foundation.
5) Inclusivity and Diversity. A comprehensive approach to workforce development includes promoting inclusivity and diversity. Programs should aim to provide opportunities for individuals from various backgrounds, ensuring equitable access to education and employment opportunities.
6) AI is here to stay. The impact of technology and automation on the job market is significant. Workforce development strategies need to address the changing nature of work, preparing individuals for roles that leverage technology and adapting to industries undergoing automation.
Thank you for being on this journey during my first year at Deaconess Foundation. I’m looking forward to continue advancing the mission in partnership and solidarity.
