Year 2 Reflection: A Message from Danielle Crawford, VP of Grantmaking

As I close my second year at the Deaconess Foundation, I find myself reflecting on the transformative work made possible through the collective efforts of our grantees, partners, and the Deaconess Foundation Board of Directors. Year 2 was not just a continuation of our commitment to systemic change but a deepening of our resolve to drive innovation, advance equity, and create sustainable impact in Cuyahoga County.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this past year has been witnessing the ripple effects of the programs we’ve supported. For example, the Senior Care Collaborative’s (led by the McGregor Foundation) partnership with Arena Analytics has proven to be a game-changer in addressing workforce challenges within the senior care sector. Through data-driven hiring practices, the collaborative not only reduced turnover rates but also identified new pathways for career advancement. Their innovative approach, including the Earn & Learn Certified Nursing Program, exemplifies the type of forward-thinking solutions we need to address systemic workforce barriers.
Similarly, our work with Youth Opportunities Unlimited (Y.O.U.) through their Career Academies has demonstrated how intentional program design can create scalable solutions for workforce development. By providing Black and Latinx youth with equitable access to high-demand career pathways, Y.O.U.’s Career Academies are fostering economic mobility and dismantling systemic barriers to employment.
Another highlight of 2024 was our collaboration with the Cuyahoga County Workforce Funders Group and the Fund for Our Economic Future, two critical partners in advancing workforce development across Northeast Ohio. Together, we’ve supported initiatives that bridge the gap between employer needs and worker skills, ensuring more equitable access to high-quality jobs.
Year 2 also brought a deeper focus on measuring impact and fostering accountability. Across our grantmaking portfolio, we’ve prioritized partnerships that align with our core values of equity, innovation, and systems change. This has allowed us to invest in organizations that not only address immediate needs but also tackle the root causes of disparities in workforce development. By doing so, we’re laying the groundwork for sustainable, long-term change.
Looking ahead, Year 3 presents an opportunity to build on these successes and explore new ways to amplify Deaconess Foundation impact. We’re committed to supporting initiatives that challenge the status quo and push the boundaries of what’s possible. Together with our grantees, partners and our Board of Directors, we will continue to strive for a future where everyone in our community has the opportunity to earn a family sustaining wage.
To our grantees, collaborators, and supporters: thank you for your dedication and vision. The progress we’ve made together is a testament to what’s possible when we combine resources, creativity, and shared purpose. Let’s carry this momentum into the year ahead, with an unwavering focus on equity and innovation!
